At Cohoon Mediation & Conflict Resolution, we started with a simple idea: to help people find resolution. Our founder, Amber Cohoon, a business and law firm owner, knows the cost and headache of litigation. She has spent many hours in mediation with her clients and has her share of good and bad experiences with mediators. She wants to change that for her clients. She wanted to help people solve their problems and dispute in a more collaborative and cost-effective avenue.
She is an attorney and solo practitioner at Cohoon Legal. She earned her Juris Doctor from Texas A&M University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin. Her professional experience spans from working at a Fortune 500 company, start-up companies, small businesses, and nonprofits.
Amber has a genuine heart for people and a devotion to details. She is a Certified Advanced Mediator and looks forward to helping you.

Mediation is a voluntary process where parties in conflict work with a neutral third party, the mediator, to resolve disputes collaboratively. Unlike court proceedings, mediation empowers parties to control the outcome and find mutually acceptable solutions without litigation.
Anyone experiencing a conflict or dispute can benefit from mediation. Mediation offers a constructive and cost-effective alternative to traditional legal processes, whether a family matter, workplace dispute, business disagreement, or community conflict.
We handle a variety of business disputes, contract issues, employment disputes, real estate cases including commercial and residential real estate transactions, landlord-tenant disputes, and HOA and property development cases. Your attorney may request a mediation or if you are not represented by attorneys, we handles those as well.
The duration of mediation varies depending on the complexity of the issues and the parties' willingness to collaborate. Most mediations may be resolved in a half-or full-day session, but in the rare instance, multiple sessions over several weeks or months may be required.
Yes, mediation is confidential. Discussions, negotiations, and any information shared during mediation sessions are private and cannot be disclosed outside the process. This confidentiality helps create a safe environment for open communication and problem-solving.
We charge a flat fee for half-day ($500 each side) or full-day mediation ($1000 each side). If the time exceeds the allotted time, it is based on the hourly rate of $300. If attorneys are present, you will usually pay them directly for their time. However, mediation is often more cost-effective than court, as it typically involves lower legal fees and avoids lengthy litigation processes.
Yes. With Amber Cohoon's experience as a business attorney she is highly skilled at mediating business dissolutions, disputes, debt cases, and more. If you have a dispute, we feel strongly that mediation is the most cost effective solution for both parties.
We highly encourage the parties to have legal representation either with them or available during the mediation. Although legal representation is not required for mediation, parties may consult with a lawyer before or during the process to understand their rights and options. We encourage the parties to have legal advice to ensure that any agreements reached is understood as the contracts are binding.
If the parties cannot reach a mediation agreement, they still have the option to pursue other avenues for resolving their dispute, such as litigation or arbitration. However, most mediations result in mutually acceptable agreements, encouraging open communication and creative problem-solving.
Our mediation services are distinguished by our mediator's experience. We offer co-mediation for more complex disputes and you get the business and legal expertise to get down to the issues and come to a workable solutions for both parties. We prioritize parties' empowerment to control their outcomes and work diligently to ensure a positive and productive mediation experience.
There are five steps to the mediation process: Introduction, Private Sessions, Negotiation, Drafting the Agreement, and Closure. Each step is explained below:
· Introduction: The mediator introduces themselves and explains the mediation process.
· Private Sessions (Caucus): The mediator may meet privately with each party to explore options and facilitate negotiation.
· Negotiation and Agreement: The parties work together to find a mutually acceptable solution.
· Drafting the Agreement: If an agreement is reached, the mediator helps draft a formal agreement outlining the terms.
· Closure: The mediation process concludes with both parties signing the agreement.
Zoom mediation works similarly to in-person conciliation but occurs virtually using the Zoom video conferencing platform. Here's a general overview of how it typically works:
· Scheduling and Setup: The parties involved in the mediation and the mediator agree on a date and time for the session. The mediator will send Zoom meeting invitations to all participants with the meeting link and any necessary login information
· Preparation: Before the mediation session, participants may need to prepare documents or evidence relevant to the dispute. They should also ensure a stable internet connection, a device with a webcam and microphone, and a quiet, private space for the mediation session.
· Joining the Zoom Meeting: On the scheduled date and time, participants join the Zoom meeting using the provided meeting link. If they haven't already, they may need to download the Zoom app. Throughout the mediation process, Zoom delivers features such as video conferencing, screen sharing, chat functionality, and break-out groups to facilitate communication and collaboration among the parties and the mediator.
